WordPress 5.0 “Bebo”

– major update –

Category: Knowledge

Level: Beginner

Over time, WordPress has made multiple updates, many of them minor. All were designed to improve performance and optimize the user experience on the platform. On December 6, 2018, WordPress released the long-awaited version 5.0, also called Bebo, named after the pianist Bebo Valdés. This update introduces major changes in terms of functionality and flexibility of the platform.

Below we describe the major changes introduced in WordPress 5.0:

The New Gutenberg – block-based editor

Perhaps the most important change in Bebo, the WordPress 5.0 update, is the new Gutenberg editor, a block-based editor designed to simplify content creation. Gutenberg was actually introduced in versions of the 4.x generation, but version 5.0 brings a series of new capabilities. Previously, content could be added in large blocks or placed on the page as a single block; now it works differently. Each type of content is allocated its own block. This makes reorganizing content on the page much easier by simply moving blocks. In version 4.9, there was a single editor with buttons at the top; now each block has its own editing buttons, specific to the type of content it displays.

Another feature of Gutenberg is that, besides the default theme blocks, each user can create custom blocks to streamline page layout and focus more on the content itself.

Dynamic content – rapid changes

The WordPress 5.0 update also allows blocks to be used across multiple pages and edited from a single location, the so-called reusable blocks. Different templates with a predefined configuration of individual blocks can be set. n this case, Gutenberg ensures that any change made in a block automatically updates the content wherever that block appears, maintaining a consistent website appearance. To prevent accidental code changes and content alteration, WordPress ensures that the content structure cannot be easily modified. Individual blocks have thus become a convenient way for users to directly and easily change content.

Improved Application Programming Interface (API)

Matt Mullenweg, the creator of WordPress, believes that the most important update Gutenberg brings is the improvement of the copy/paste function. It is now much easier to take content from other sources and place it on the page without it being altered by pre-formatting. Copying URLs is much faster, skipping previously necessary steps. WordPress 5.0 allows direct URL copying without the need to copy the link to the clipboard, highlight text, create a link, and insert it.

The classic editor is still available

For those who are not yet fully convinced that the WordPress 5.0 update fully meets their needs, or who still need to gather more information about it, they can revert to the Classic Editor, which will run in parallel with the new editor until 2021. This plugin restores the previous WordPress editor and the Edit Post screen.

Should you update to WordPress 5.0?

We say it’s good, but not right now. It’s good because your platform needs to keep up with new developments, and good from a security perspective (security updates are expected for both version 5.0 and the previous version). In addition, it’s beneficial because you can take advantage of the new tools described above.

When to update to WordPress 5.0

Before updating, make sure your theme and plugins are compatible with WordPress 5.0. Many developers have been working for months on this compatibility, making their themes and plugins ready. However, some are not yet compatible, which could disrupt the system. Some themes and plugins require disabling the new editor – Gutenberg – and enabling the classic editor for compatibility reasons. This can be done relatively easily via a plugin provided by WordPress – https://wordpress.org/plugins/classic-editor/ .

Our recommendation is to check compatibility and then wait a few weeks or a month to ensure that any bugs (or features not yet working perfectly) have been resolved, both in WordPress and in themes/plugins.

Let’s enjoy the launch of WordPress 5.0 and aim to provide an even better experience for visitors to websites built on the WordPress platform.
